Civil Air Patrol was established in 1941, and was chartered by Congress in 1946 as outlined in 36 U.S.C. §403. CAP was recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization by the IRS in 1947. The aviation education program of CAP qualifies as a "nonprofit educational organization" for purposes of the exemption from retailers, manufacturers, communications, and transportation taxes.

Create a Facebook Fundraiser

Support us by creating a fundraiser that people can donate directly to Civil Air Patrol's National Capital Wing. You can also designate donations to one of our squadrons by using the unit charter number or name in the title of your fundraiser. Facebook pays all the processing fees, so 100% of your donation goes directly to us.

Wreaths Across America

Every year in December, wreaths are donated through Wreaths Across America to veteran cemeteries across the country to place a holiday wreath on each headstone to honor those who served. Civil Air Patrol units collect $15 donations to sponsor a wreath, and in-turn receive $5 back as part of the fundraiser.

This year, National Wreaths Across America Day is Dec. 18, 2021. Links to each of our squadron’s fundraising pages will be added here if they participate.

Other Ways to Give

There are many other ways to give through our national headquarters beyond donating directly to our wing.

Employer Match

The matching gifts program is great for maximizing your donation dollar. Many employers will match your gift dollar for dollar or even triple your gift. Some employers may also make a donation based on volunteer hours.

AmazonSmile

AmazonSmile is a simple way for you to support Civil Air Patrol every time you shop, at no cost to you. To use AmazonSmile, simply go to smile.amazon.com on your web browser or activate AmazonSmile in the Amazon Shopping app on your iOS or Android phone. AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of your eligible purchases to your charity of choice. All donated proceeds are designated to go to the National Cadet Scholarship Fund. Individual echelons below NHQ are not authorized to set up separate AmazonSmile accounts to fund their own respective initiatives. Civil Air Patrol has only a single EIN that identifies CAP in the AmazonSmile program.
