As a cadet squadron, membership focus is on cadet members. Weekly meetings are mainly aimed at advancing cadets through the CAP Cadet Program. A separate meeting may be determined for active senior members as needed.

Squadron Commander's Bio

Capt. Mathew Clayton is the Howard Town Cadet Squadron commander and officer-in-charge of the National Capital Wing Honor Guard. Clayton joined Civil Air Patrol as a cadet in 2001. As a cadet, he served in numerous cadet positions, including cadet commander of the Golden Triangle Composite Squadron. He earned the Eaker Award as a cadet in Mississippi Wing and continued to serve CAP in California and Washington wings after enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. As a cadet, he represented CAP at 4 National Cadet Competitions and Drill Competitions. As a senior member, he represented cadets in 4 other competitions. In 2013, he rejoined CAP as a senior member and served overseas as the deputy commander for seniors in the Ramstein squadron in Germany. He later served as deputy commander for cadets for Tuskegee Composite Squadron in National Capital Wing.

Clayton is a 10-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he earned his 7-level rating for C-130, C-5, and C-17 maintenance crew chief. He served as a unit deployment manager, crew chief at Travis Air Force Base while assigned to the 60th Air Mobility Squadron. He also served the 571st Global Mobility Readiness Squadron as a crew chief and a unit deployment manager while still at Travis and deploying several times. He went on to serve as a unit deployment manager and a maintenance and logistics controller at the 603rd Air and Space Operations at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

Clayton assumed command of Civil Air Patrol’s Howard Town Cadet Squadron in March 2021.
